There's an old saying in the music business aficionados invoke when they hear a current day hit record which sounds mysteriously like something somebody recorded years ago. And "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke is a prime example. This particular incarnation of "what's old is what's new" would probably make Marvin Gaye roll over in his grave. "Got To Give It Up" was a classic...and "Blurred Lines" a clone!
Now I don't have a dog in this fight (as they say) even though my father's second wife was having an affair with Marvin while daddy was bedding a stewardess as their marriage disintegrated. According to Pam, all Marvin wanted to do was sniff cocaine and have sex during their dalliance. Whatever...I offer both recordings for your edification...and it doesn't take a musician to understand that Marvin is the genius...and Robin the counterfeiter.
Kind of reminds me of Craig Newmark of Craigslist and Carl Ferrer of Backpage. The former is the visionary who founded a new medium...and the latter the cloner who capitalized on the other's ingenuity. Mind you...I like Carl. He's a square guy. But an innovator? Not hardly! Capitalist grinder would be a much more apt description.
Anyway...on to more relevant topics! Old favorite JUNE (once of HOT LIPS fame) will be joining the crew at ASIAN FLOWERS (646-639-1195) in short order. And I was over at ASIAN VIP (646-391-2639) for a visit yesterday and AGUA is still a major head turner. Unfortunately, while I was schmoozing with the phone girl (old friend), the girls told her in Korean "Get Billy the fuck out. We're shy!"
Call me crazy...but isn't that like a porn star who can't pee in a public bathroom? Like...how does that make any sense? Regardless...here's Marvin Gaye and his modern day clone Robin Thicke (with the unrated nude version)...and JUNE as a reminder. You can be the judge of all parties pictured.
